Fatemeh Abbasi stated that PKU disease in Iran has a prevalence of one in every five thousand births, and said that between 300 and 400 babies with phenylketonuria (PKU) born in Iran every year. Abbasi called the main treatment of this disease in nutrition therapy and explained: the treatment services for these patients should be performed under the supervision of a team including pediatricians, nutritionists, psychologists, nurses and social workers, and it will be effective if this process to be started before the third week of the baby's life. The deputy for rehabilitation affairs of State welfare organization regarding the prevention and identification of these patients said: In order to prevent and reduce the damage caused by the metabolic disease like phenylketonuria (PKU), the state welfare organization, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, identified these patients and treated them with the goal of reducing disabilities caused by brain damage and mental retardation is nutritional and therapeutic support. It should be noted that Phenylketonuria (commonly known as PKU) is an inherited disorder that increases the levels of a substance called phenylalanine in the blood. Phenylalanine is a protein building block (an amino acid) that is obtained from eating certain foods (such as meat, eggs, nuts, and milk) and in some artificial sweeteners.
The deputy for rehabilitation affairs of the State welfare organization said: Currently, more than 2,900 patients with PKU and their families are rendering different educational, nutritional and medical services from SWO.
