Establishing rehabilitation homes for independent living and social integration of people with disabilities

The Deputy for rehabilitation affairs of SWO announced the establishment of rehabilitation homes as one of the new policies of SWO to support the independent life of people with disabilities, saying: "these homes, with a space similar to normal homes and a capacity of up to 10 people, provide the target group with the opportunity for social interaction and a quality life."

According to the Public Relations and International Affairs, Fatemeh Abbasi, Deputy Director of Rehabilitation at the Welfare Organization, said about keeping 93 percent of people with disabilities at home and the organization's program for structured support for their families: "The Welfare Organization is one of the custodians of support, welfare, and rehabilitation services to the community, which has been providing its services for more than half a century, according to the needs of the target community."

The Deputy Director of Rehabilitation of SWO added: Awareness and prevention programs for disabilities, subsidies for the provision of health items, artificial limbs, rehabilitation aids, providing rehabilitation services through the purchase of services, home adaptation, community-based rehabilitation programs, providing services in vocational training centers and support workshops, and paying basic pensions are also among the organization's other services.

Abbasi said: The SWO’s policy, in addition to strengthening family-oriented programs, is also pursued in line with the successful discharge of the target group from residential centers and creating conditions for social integration and independent living.

she added: According to Article 19, paragraph "A" of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, these people must have the opportunity to choose their place of residence and their companions, on an equal basis with others.

she said: "Given this issue and the collective nature of day-care centers, the Welfare Organization has established rehabilitation homes in order to respect individual rights, social integration, and empower the target group."

Abbasi added: "The purpose of establishing these homes is to prepare individuals for independent living by providing optimal, coherent services in an emotional, social, and educational environment in homes similar to ordinary Iranian family homes and based on indigenous and local traditions." These homes are considered a type of residence and provide facilities such as rooms, meals, cleaning, and home care.

She elsewhere said: "These types of residential facilities have conditions similar to a family environment and allow residents to enjoy natural and social interactions. Each home has a maximum capacity of 10 people, and residents can benefit from the services of kindergartens, educational centers, vocational training, employment, and, if needed, out-of-home medical and rehabilitation services within the framework of the social participation policy."

The Deputy Director of Rehabilitation of the Welfare Organization concluded by saying: Currently, supportive homes for chronically mentally ill patients, small homes for people with mild intellectual disabilities, unknown or without effective guardians, small rehabilitation homes for people with moderate and severe disabilities, supportive and care homes for the elderly, and rehabilitation and care group homes for people with physical and motor disabilities are active in the country.
