The 2026 Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Population Ageing is being held in Hangzhou, China, from 27 to 30 October, bringing together government representatives and international organizations.

According to the Public Relations and International Affairs Department of the State Welfare Organization of Iran, the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Population Ageing commenced today, Tuesday, 27 October 2026 (5 Aban 1405), in Hangzhou, China, under the theme “Convergence, Innovation and Sustainability: A Shared Agenda for Population Ageing.” The conference will continue until Friday, 30 October 2026 (8 Aban 1405).

Seyed Javad Hosseini, Deputy Minister of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare and Head of Iran’s State Welfare Organization (SWO), has travelled to China at the head of a delegation to participate in the conference.

The event brings together approximately 700 participants, including representatives of governments, regional and international organizations, academic experts, civil society, and the private sector. It is jointly hosted by the Government of China, HelpAge International, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The conference focuses on four key areas related to population ageing: the silver economy, technology and artificial intelligence, sustainable care for older persons, and age-friendly communities.

More than 50 programme activities have been scheduled, including plenary and technical sessions, parallel sessions, side events, and field visits. Participants will examine policies, experiences, and shared approaches to addressing the challenges of population ageing across the Asia-Pacific region.

The Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Population Ageing has been held biennially since 2002. Over more than two decades, with different countries—including Australia, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Iran—serving as hosts, the conference has developed into a platform for exchanging experiences and strengthening regional cooperation on ageing.

Key objectives of this year’s conference include strengthening international cooperation, sharing successful experiences in ageing-related policymaking, promoting and protecting the rights of older persons, and harnessing their potential for active participation in society. The event also provides an opportunity to explore innovative and sustainable approaches to responding to demographic changes and improving the well-being and quality of life of older persons.
